Lynga sand dune
In Haverdal Nature Reserve and along its beach stand several stately and living sand dunes of different shapes and sizes. Among all these you will find one of Scandinavia's highest dunes, Lynga sand dune or Stora Sandkullen as it is also called.
Lynga sand dune measures a full 36 metres above sea level and a narrow and steep staircase leads you to the top. Once up, you will be greeted by a fantastic view of the beach forest, the sea and its surroundings. Up on top there is also a picnic table – so do not forget to fill your backpack with coffee and snacks before you set off!
In the middle of Haverdal Nature Reserve
The area below and around it, Haverdal Nature Reserve (Swe) External link, opens in new window., is also worth discovering. There are many paths and the gnarled and swirling tree trunks with their strange shapes are an experience in themselves. By the car park, there is also a corridor of fossil sand dunes in the pine forest. They began to take shape as long as 400 years ago when the original forest had been cut down. Read some tips for walking trips on our page – Superb day trips on foot.
The history of Lynga sand dune
In the 17th and 18th centuries, there were problems with sand blowing out on to farmlands and roads, which led to the eventual planting of the sandfield with grass, pine, birch, alder and mountain pine. Today, drifting sand is no longer a problem, but instead the dunes have grown again and the forest is becoming more dense. Many of the species that used to be common are now threatened or completely lost. The nature reserve is working to recreate the environments around the dunes.
